Jade’s schedule was more relaxed the next day. Caleb led another session of yoga for those interested. This time I felt better prepared, and even though Maia joined us, I was able to focus. When I was distracted, it wasn’t because of Maia.

Luca placed his makeshift mat close to us. What game was he playing? Luca and I had always got along before. When we were younger, we all played together. As we got older, he was interested in doing other things than we were. After the kiss incident, he was downright hostile toward me. Maia said he’d blamed me for her getting sent away. I completely understood that. I had blamed myself. But I felt like there was more to it. How was Luca involved?

Luca had always been more social than Maia. Always joking around. Nothing I’d seen recently really supported that version of him. There had been moments of the old Luca, but mostly he was more reserved. Almost sullen.

After we finished yoga, a game of volleyball started up. Normally, I’d participate, but I wanted to focus on everyone else. Especially Luca and Maia. Was she telling me everything? Could I really trust her? She wasn’t twirling her hair, so I didn’t think she was lying.

The person Luca interacted with the most today was Stevie. He’s seemed hostile toward him before, so this surprised me. When did they start bonding?

Maia plopped down in the sand beside me, and we both watched the game. Since only the guys were playing, they did skins against shirts. It was a nice view. Stevie, Luca, Mark, and Boonie were skins. Jade, Cian, Rob, and Aaron were shirts. Not sure that it mattered since it wasn’t like they were playing basketball where the teams were mixed together. I suspected the guys just wanted to show off. And although I could appreciate muscled chests and killer abs, I was more attracted to the girl sitting next to me than any of those guys.

“Caleb didn’t want to play?” Maia asked, nodding over at Caleb a few feet from us watching his boyfriend play.

“His sugar was a little low. He didn’t want to chance it.”

“He’s diabetic?”

“No,” I said, smiling at her confused look. “He’s a person with diabetes.”

She nodded, watching the game for a few minutes, and then glancing over at the other spectators. “What is her problem?” Jessica was sitting next to Suzette, and she alternated between drooling at the guys and gushing over Suzette.

“You called it,” I said, bumping against her. “She’s extra simp.”

“I was a mess last night.”

“But a cute mess.”

She didn’t respond, and I wasn’t brave enough to look at her. I tried to will the heat away from my face. Hopefully anyone looking would think it was from the sun.

We focused on the game which had turned brutal.

Luca spiked the ball hard at Jade, who jumped out of the way, throwing his hands up.

“The point is not letting it hit the ground,” Rob said, patting Jade on the back as they changed positions.
